Between January and August of this year the province with the greatest number of construction permits issued is Puntarenas, with more than 5 million square metres (m2) Tof construction, similar to the number registered in all of 2006.
Contrary to popular belief, Puntarenas is the province with the highest growth, keeping the Guanacaste province in its second place, according to the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos (CFIA).
CFIA figures indicate that the growth doubled from 2004 when during the period of January to August permits were issued for 2.63 m2, jumping to 5.27 m2 for the same period in 2006.
On a local basis, the CFIA reports that the canto de Alajuela is in first place with a 7.5% growth during January and August, followed by Santa Cruz at 7%, Heredia at 6.4% and Garabito (which includes Jacó) at 6% and Carrillo at 5.6%.
The highest number of construction permits are for residential homes (42%), followed by commercial developments (16%) and industrial buildings (8%). Permits for community, institutional, tourist, religious and health projects share 18% of the total permits issued.
