Costa Rica is considered one of the best tourist destinations in Central and South America according to major world tourism publications alongside Brazil, Perú, Belize and Argentina. At least that is the consensus of Travel Weekly that said Costa Rica is one of the better tourist spots in the continent during the international tourist fair (Feria Internacional de Turismo) in Spain. The prize was awarded following the consideration of 180.000 readers that include travel agencies, tours and hotel operators, suppliers and tourist industry groups. The Costa Rican tourism minister, Ricardo Benavides and the head of the Cámara Nacional de Turismo (Canatur) - national tourism chamber - Gonzalo Vargas, accepted the award on Costa Rica's behalf. "We are very proud to be included in this category, mainly because the award allows us to be distinguished in the North American tourism industry, which recognizes the quality of Costa Rican tourism", said Benavides. Benavides added that topping the 265.000 European tourists who visited Costa Rica in 2007 will be their goal as the promotion in the "old continent" is being enhanced to attract more visitors. Spain is the country with the majority of European visitors. According to Canatur date, 57.000 visitors from Spain came to Costa Rica last year, followed by Germans, with 43.000 tourists. |
